California Family Rights Act Expands
/The California Family Rights Act (CFRA) recently expanded with updates to leave requirements. Here’s what you need to know about the changes:
What’s new?
Effective Jan. 1, 2021, CFRA has expanded to include leave to care for additional family members with a serious health condition. This means employees are now eligible to take leave to care for their:
Sibling
Grandparent
Grandchild
Registered domestic partners (adults and children)
Can I take leave for myself or other family members?
Yes, you may still qualify for leave under CFRA and/or Family Medical Leave to care for yourself or the following family members with a serious health condition:
Spouse
Child (of any age)
Parent
Any other significant changes?
Both parents are now eligible to each take up to 12 weeks of leave for bonding.
To care for a domestic partner, you will need to confirm that they are a registered domestic partner through the California Secretary of State.
